Oncotarget Publishes Articles on Parkinson’s Disease and Cancer Treatment

An article recently published on Oncotarget revealed that a licorice extract can be used in the prevention and treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The disease mainly affects people aged 60 and above, and is characterized by decline in certain brain functions. There is no known cure for the disease and the only treatment patients receive is meant to improve their quality of life by managing the symptoms, which include stiffness, postural instability, and tremor among other symptoms. A recent study showed that a licorice extract known as liquiritigenin can be used to treat the degenerative brain disease as it inhibits the death of dopamine neuronal cells, which is what causes Parkinson’s and several other health problems such as diabetes and heart attack.

In October 2017, IntraGen announced that the results of a study they had been doing on metastatic colorectal cancer was published on Oncotarget. The article, title revealed that analyzing miR-31-3p expression levels in patients can be used as a way of diagnosing metastatic colorectal cancer and identifying patients who qualify for treatment using the targeted anti-EGFR therapy. The analysis of miR-31-3p as a way of diagnosing metastatic colorectal cancer is something that is still under investigation and the results of this study are therefore a huge step in this field.
