Dr. Clay Siegall Is Establishing A Connection Between DNA And Treating Cancer

Cancer is feared because of the disability and death it brings to millions of individuals every year. A rapid diagnosis and treatment are critical to a patients outcome. New windows have opened due to the advances in genetic testing in cancer research. Advanced techniques in treating and diagnosing cancer more effectively are becoming possible. One of the leaders in the industry is Clay Siegall who founded Seattle Genetics.

Humans have roughly 20,000 genes that form unique DNA codes. In the past it was not possible to extract this code. Advances in research have determined this code predisposes individuals to specific diseases such as cancer. There are other factors as well including environment and diet. These factors combine with genetic predispositions and scientists believe if a DNA code can be extracted quickly it can diagnose cancer and a targeted treatment can be created.

Cancer is a term describing hundreds of different diseases. The differences in the occurrence in individuals is based on genetics, hormones and an individuals biological makeup. This is why people with the same diagnosis respond differently when treated. Genetic sequencing takes each individuals DNA code into consideration. Prostate cancer is an excellent example because it previously involved months of bloodwork, biopsies and ultrasounds to achieve a diagnosis. New advancements allow a diagnosis within two weeks because it is targeted with their genetic profile.

In 1989 Seattle Genetics was co-founded by Dr. Clay Siegall. His leadership has allowed the company to develop diverse therapies for cancer including Adcetris which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved in 2011. He has been at the head of their fund raising and secured in excess of $675 million through both private and public financing.

Dr. Siegall served Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical from 1991 until 1997 before he founded Seattle Genetics. From 1988 until 1991 he worked with the National Institute of Health and the National Cancer Institute. He is on the board for Alder BioPharmaceuticals which is a private biotechnology firm. He is an author, holds numerous patents, has a Ph.D. in Genetics and a B.S. in Zoology.

Jim Larkin was an Advocate for the Workers

James Larkin was born in Liverpool, England in 1876. He was an Irish labor organizer and formed the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union (ITGWU). Larkin grew up working a variety of jobs as a youth in order to help his family. He eventually elevated himself to the position of foreman at the docks in Liverpool. He became a member of the National Union of Dock Laborers (NUDL). Mr. Larkin was a self proclaimed socialist who always felt workers were not treated with the fairness and respect they deserved.

In 1905, Larkin became a full time union organizer and often employed militant strike methods to get his point across. His methods concerned NUDL greatly and in 1907, Larkin was transferred to Dublin, Ireland and formed the ITGWU. The main goal of the union was to organize all skilled and unskilled laborers into one organization and create solidarity among the workers.

Larkin was responsible for leading a series of strikes after he established the Irish Labor Party. In 1913, Larkin led the Dublin Lockout where more than 100,000 unionized workers went on strike and eventually won the right to fair employment practices. The strike lasted for eight months.

As World War One was gearing up, Larkin once again organized anti-war demonstrations in Dublin. Traveling to the United States, he also raised funds to help fund the fight against the British.

Larkin was convicted, in 1920, of communism and capital anarchy. After three years of unfortunate incarceration, he was pardoned and deported back to Ireland. Once back in Ireland. Larkin established the Worker’s Union of Ireland and in 1924, the group was recognized by Communist International.

Larkin launched a newspaper in 1911, entitled the “Irish Worker.” The paper proved to be a huge success and demonstrated Larkin’s ability to be an editor of substance. Shortly after the paper launched, the “Great Labor Unrest” occurred in Britain and brought the ITGWU into the fray.

Larkin took on the challenge of the unrest and was responsible for expanding the union from a mere 5,000 members to more than 15,000 members. The group suddenly had exceptional power and through the group’s efforts. Congress agreed to establish the Labor Union in 1912.

Larkin accrued great power and popularity, but the extra work load he was taking on was beginning to affect his health. He believed it was essential to always set a good example so he never looked for an easier way to complete a task. Many employers were beginning to resent Jim Larkin and his union winning methods and referred to his methods as Larkinism. Employers were resentful of his popularity and power and worked endlessly to minimize his power and keep employees from embracing Larkins winning ways. Read more: Jim Larkin | Wikipedia

In 1914, Larkin travelled to the United States. Even though he remained with the ITGWU as the general secretary, he was more interested in embarking on a different career path and it was as a public speaker. He announced he was taking a brief respite from the union business and most thought it was for health reasons, but it was to pursue his other chosen career path.

Larkin spent the rest of his days in tumultuous pursuit of his public speaking interest and his love of labor and organizing unions. He decided to return to Ireland, but was unable to get a passport from the United States government.

He was eventually deported to England by J. Edgar Hoover and found his onetime admirers were turning their backs on him. Larkin passed away in 1947 never regaining the glory that was once bestowed him.

Ways that Securus Technologies Helps Eliminate Contraband from Our Prison

When me and my fellow corrections officers are offered another resource in our wage against drugs in the prison, we jump at the opportunity. This month we were told that Securus Technologies was going to be installing their inmate call monitor system, and we couldn’t wait to see what this newly upgraded system would allow us to do. We know how dangerous our jail can be if we allow the inmates to use drugs, so anything that will help us to clean up the location is welcomed.

We have been seeing instances in our facility where an inmate will take heroin or crack, then become so violent that we need a dozen officers to get control of the situation. If we had several inmates in that condition, there is no telling how violent things could become. We trust that Securus Technologies will be able to help, they are already using this exact call monitoring system in over two thousand jails around the country. The CEO of the company says his one thousand employees are dedicating themselves to making our world that much safer.

The day that me and my fellow corrections officers were trained to use the LBS software, we could not wait to see how effective the new monitoring system would be. It didn’t take but a few minutes for the system to alert my team that there was chatter inside the jail concern different types of drugs. One call was about an inmate who was asking family to bring him some prescription drugs that he could use in his cell. One inmate was talking about where he had hidden drugs in his cell and how his mom could send small amounts in letters. We take each alert serious and take action the minute we can so drug use is better controlled.

The Tremendous Growth Of Media Landscape In Mexico City

The media landscape in Mexico City has flourished over the last two decades at a high rate. Some people tend to criticize TV giants such as Televisa and TV Azteca of supporting government views rather than concentrating on investigative journalism. But this is just but a mere criticism because, in today’s world, media houses do not depend on government ad incomes or revenues from companies owned by the state to succeed. Of course, political activities form part of the city developments, and they must be spoken, but today’s media outlets concentrate on interpreting political trends in the country and not supporting the government. Television world has been dominated by a newscaster, Jacobo Zabludovsky of Televisa for a long time and it is after his death that Joaquim Lopez Doriga replaced him. Both have managed to exert a lot of influence on the new market of capital television.

While renowned news broadcaster who was also a CNN contributor was pushed out of the air, residents in Mexico City still have a wide variety where they can watch or listen to the news. There are about ten diverse new programs on TV where everyone can watch the news. Apart from radio and TV channels the magazine market is also growing as part of the media landscape. The most powerful Magazine brands are Nexos and Proceso, but there are numerous newcomers in the industry such as Emeequis, Chilango, and Gatopardo among others. All the brands have a perfect share in the market because they concentrate on different aspects of the city. For instance, Letras Libres mostly concentrates on cultural affairs while Gatapardo mostly features glossy photos, collector’s quality paper, advertisement and strong stories that are related to crime and security. It is fair to say that the media industry in Mexico has grown tremendously and one can only expect more in the coming years.
